The SHIP'S ASSISTANT COOK assists the Cook/Steward in preparing and serving meals for the crew and staff on an oceanographic research vessel.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is the first of a two-level series. This class is distinguished from the Ship's Cook level by the absence of responsibility for planning and preparing complete meals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Food Preparation. Typical tasks: makes salads, coffee, sandwiches, and other minor dishes as assigned; loads and unloads food in storerooms, refrigerators, and freezers; serves food; supplies condiments and sets tables as required; operates galley equipment, such as meat grinder and coffee maker, in food preparation.
- Food Clean-Up. Typical tasks: cleans galley, mess hall, storerooms, refrigerators, and freezers; empties and cleans out trash and garbage cans; mops and cleans floors and walls; operates dishwasher to clean dishes and pans.
- Linen Detail. Typical tasks: cleans living quarters and makes up bunks; receives, stores, and issues clean linen; collects and stores dirty linen.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
Employees in this class have occasional contact with food vendors. Work is assigned and completed on board the ship.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Employees in this class receive general supervision from the Ship's Master. Daily assignments, coordination, and review of work is provided by the Ship's Cook, who in turn reports to the Ship's Master. Work is reviewed daily for cleanliness and conformance to health standards required for an oceanographic vessel.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Positions in this class are found on ships conducting research at sea for extended periods of time. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 6 months of experience as a cook’s helper
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Merchant Mariner’s Credential issued by the U.S. Coast Guard
- Food Handler's card issued by the State of Oregon
- Ability to obtain a passport
- Ability to complete fire fighting training
- Successfully complete First Aid and CPR Training
- Ability to speak, read, and write English
- Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements
