The SEED ANALYST 2 independently performs complex purity, germination, or special tests on field crop, forest tree, vegetable, shrub, flower, or miscellaneous species of seed samples to determine seed quality.


This is the third level of a three-level series. This class is distinguished from the lower-level classes by the responsibility for independently performing seed testing on complex species, for more comprehensive knowledge of seed testing rules and regulations, and by assigning and reviewing the work of Seed Analyst Entry employees.


Allocation of positions to this class will depend on the total work performed which may include one or a combination of the duties or tasks listed below.

  1. Purity Testing. Typical tasks: performs purity testing on complex samples (i.e. bluegrass, bentgrass, brassicas, and wheatgrasses), by visually examining a premeasured seed sample under magnifying lens or microscope, manually separating sample with forceps or tweezers into components of pure crop seed, other crop seed, inert matter (stones, dirt, leafage, stems, badly broken seed) and weed seed, weighing each component part of sample on mechanical or electronic scale, and computing percentage part of total sample of each component found.
  2. Germination Testing. Typical tasks: performs germination testing on complex samples (i.e. sugar beets, bentgrass, bluegrass, flower, and shrub seeds) by determining the number of seeds required for sample and test type, placing the required number of seeds in appropriate germination medium, determining and noting on sample tray the proper review schedule; places tray in cold room for chill test or in lighted or dark germinator as appropriate, reviews germination progress at specified periods to determine number of seeds which have properly germinated, number of abnormal germinants, and number of dead seed, computes percentages of each and records findings on test record sheet.
  3. Special Testing. Typical tasks: sets up and performs special seed tests such as tetrazolium or other chemical stain tests to determine live seed, examination of seed in fluorescence chamber (black light), x-ray examinations for the presence of pests, hollow seeds or seed damage; performs seed weight, chromosome count, bioassay, or other special chemical or physical tests of seed to determine seed quality.
  4. Training. Typical tasks: directly provides or assists in providing training in laboratory techniques, test standards, seed types and varieties, pest and disease types and identification, and specific test procedures to Seed Analyst (Entry) or student workers; attends and participates in special training sessions to inform laboratory personnel about changes in standards or new methods in the seed analysis field.
  5. Equipment Operation. Typical tasks: uses technical equipment for seed testing such as seed dividers, seed blowers, binocular microscopes, x-ray machine, x-ray film developing equipment, fluorescent (black light) examination booth, germinators, and related equipment; uses hand lenses; uses small hand-manipulated tools such as forceps, scalpels, razors, and needles in examination of seed samples; assures cleanliness standards and avoids sample contamination by use of compressed air blowers, towels, or brushes, to keep tools and work areas clean; may use standard laboratory equipment in mixing chemical solutions used in tests.
  6. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: assists supervisor with greeting and guiding tour groups through the seed laboratory; supervises the unit in the absence of the Seed Analyst Supervisor (monitor work quality, answer customer questions regarding test results).


Employees in this class have occasional contact with customers, academics, or the general public to provide Information about seed testing results or to conduct tours of the facility.


Employees in this class receive general supervision from a Seed Analyst Supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with laboratory policy and specific standards set by State and Federal law, USDA standards, Canadian Seed Test Rules, European Economic Community standards, the International Seed Testing Association rules, the Higher Voluntary Standards of Great Britain, and standards set by the Association of Official Seed Analysts. There are also in-house manuals for seed, pest, or disease identification as well as laboratory library and herbarium available to the employee.


Positions are primarily found in central and remote locations throughout the state. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.


  • Three years of full-time experience performing purity, germination, or special tests on seeds such as Bluegrass or Bentgrass seeds and training providing the knowledge of AOSA and SCST rules for testing seeds; OR
  • Two years of the above full-time experience and 12 quarter hours of college courses in the plant sciences such as botany, crop science, seed technology, agronomy, etc., and training providing knowledge of AOSA or SCST rules for testing seeds; OR
  • A certificate of competency in seed testing from either AOSA or SCST and either 12 quarter hours of college courses in the plant sciences as described above or one year of the above full-time experience.
