GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The PSU Recycling Specialist performs recycling services to the Portland State University campus community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. General Recycling. Typical tasks:?? provide recycling and composting service to PSU's campus community; move loaded material in carts, bags, boxes and other containers; transfer recycled material between containers; maintain recycling sites in accordance with program signage and cleanliness guidelines; maintain records of work completed.
  2. Outreach.?? Typical tasks: deliver recycling presentations to the campus community in a professional manner; communicate effectively with program staff, faculty, and students; distribute waste prevention outreach information on campus; represent the PSU Recycles! program in a professional manner at events and while on the route collecting recyclables.
  3. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: Perform waste sort analysis of recycling and landfill material. Cleans out containers and equipment as necessary.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class are in regular contact with students, staff, volunteers, and faculty. Employees may communicate the PSU recycling goals to the campus community. The PSU Recycling Specialist has regular contact in person or by telephone with other employees in the work unit to exchange information about work assignments or to get additional instruction. The employee has occasional contact with employees in other units and the public to exchange information related to doing the assigned work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from a recycling supervisor, facilities manager. Employees may receive daily work assignments/instructions from a Recycling Coordinator or lead worker. Work is reviewed upon completion to verify work has been done correctly and properly. Must adhere to established safety guidelines and requirements, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment.

GENERAL INFORMATION

PSU Recycling Specialists work both indoors and outdoors in weather that may be inclement or extreme, and may work in an industrial setting where temperatures, lighting, noise and air quality may vary. Position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Positions repeatedly, push, pull, bend, stoop, and climb stairs. This position also requires the ability to stand in one place for up to two hours at a time to staff a recycling station. Position requires the ability to drive program vehicles in accordance with State of Oregon Rules of the Road, University and Facilities & Planning driving regulations, and PSU Recycles! guidelines.
