GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The CAMPUS SECURITY AND PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER is responsible for the maintenance of order and the public safety and security of persons and property on the campus of the State System of Higher Education. Duties are usually performed in a normal work setting.

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Patrol Duties. Typical tasks: receives specific patrol or location assignment at the beginning of each shift, along with special duty assignments and information about potential problems; patrols assigned area on foot or in a vehicle; observes persons and conditions and provides assistance when necessary (e.g., information, directions, access to buildings, late night escort, etc.); assists drivers with jump starts or access to vehicles when keys are locked inside; maintains contact with supervisor or central office by use of two-way radio; responds to emergency calls regarding accident or injury; secures scene, renders first aid or CPR if necessary; calls for assistance as needed; directs traffic and provides peace officers with assistance and information as needed; may transport ill or injured persons to medical facilities; observes and reports potentially hazardous physical conditions; may remedy condition when appropriate (e.g., fallen limbs, debris, damage to streets or sidewalks, etc.); cites persons or vehicles for violations; responds to situations representing a threat to persons or property (e.g., break-ins, fights, drug activity, etc.); may intervene to prevent injury, and call for police assistance as necessary; may make probable cause arrests based on third-party information; secures scene and may interview or obtain statements from witnesses, victim, or suspects, as appropriate to assist local law enforcement officials.
  2. Recordkeeping and Reporting. Typical tasks: maintains personal log of all on-duty activities, noting date, time, location and circumstances of all incidents; writes complete standardized report of all accidents, injuries, crimes, or other reportable matters including date, time, location, nature of the incident, names of witnesses, victims, suspects, and summaries of all related information; verbally (in-person or by radio) reports any and all unusual conditions or occurrences to supervisor; provides information or testimony to law enforcement agencies or courts as required; observes and maintains confidentiality regarding all persons and incidents, as required to protect the rights of individuals and the integrity of investigations in accordance with law, rule, policy and procedure; may prepare special security or public safety related studies or reports at the request of supervisors; provides information or testimony to campus traffic or parking tribunals.
  3. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: provides on-site security services to a museum, art gallery, special collection, or at games or special events on campus; provides escort or directly transports large amounts of cash from the campus to local banks; provides escort or directly transports radioactive or toxic materials from laboratories to disposal pickup points; provides training and coordination for students hired for parking or dormitory patrol services; attends and completes required training which may include, but is not necessarily limited to: first aid or first responder medical training, CPR training, crisis intervention techniques, fire or emergency response techniques, special driver training, physical fitness training, or the basic course(s) provided by the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have regular daily in-person contact with a wide variety of students, faculty, staff, administrators, and visitors on a college campus, providing information and assistance as needed. Contact ranges from providing information, to intervention with persons presenting a threat to themselves or others. There is occasional in-person, telephone or radio contact with local law enforcement officials, to seek assistance or to exchange information as may be required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision, and once fully trained, perform assigned duties independently. Work is assigned by a supervisor and is updated daily both orally and in writing at the beginning of each work shift. Work is reviewed for accuracy, timeliness, and the exercise of good judgment in accordance with law, rule, policy and procedure set forth in operational handbooks of the employing institution. Daily logs and reports are reviewed by a supervisor for conformance to standards as completed.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Employees in this class work on a campus of the State System of Higher Education. Employment in this class requires a willingness to work rotating shifts; work outside in all kinds of weather; walk, climb stairs, and be on feet for prolonged periods of time; attend training classes when available; and, a willingness to often work alone, in empty buildings or in isolated areas of the campus.
