GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The MAINTENANCE/LABORER COORDINATOR coordinates and oversees manual, unskilled and semiskilled workers in the maintenance, operation, and repair of public University buildings, equipment, work projects, and grounds. Work is performed inside and outside of University buildings or on roadways or other property under university jurisdiction.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Employees in this class coordinate a unit of unskilled and semiskilled workers assigned to a fixed location, such as a physical plant at a public University.

  1. Work Coordination. Typical tasks: inspects job site to determine extent of maintenance or repairs needed; estimates materials, time, and staffing needs for project; requisitions materials and supplies or purchases on own up to authorized spending limits; assigns work to subordinates; inspects projects periodically for quality and timeliness; keeps logs on costs and timeliness of work; coordinates work with other units to prevent delays or inconvenience to users of university services; assists supervisor in planning, assigning, and reviewing work of other workers in the unit, adjusts work assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and respond to fluctuating workloads; monitors employee performance and provides input to supervisor; assesses training needs of staff and assists supervisor in providing appropriate instruction; assists superior in providing initial orientation to new employees.??
  2. Administrative Duties. Typical tasks: assists administrative superior in tracking, monitoring, and projecting unit's budget needs; assists superior in developing policy, procedures, and plans for matters such as schedule and extent of routine preventive maintenance, emergency snow or ice removal, or seasonal upkeep of grounds, schedule and routes for mail pickup and delivery; monitors and accounts for unit's inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies; conducts annual physical inventory; acts as liaison to university staff requesting unit's services and determines appropriateness of requests; writes weekly or monthly status reports of unit activities.??
  3. Quality Assurance (QA) Inspector. Monitors and reports any contract discrepancies noted (e.g., contractors not meeting established performance standards, improper job performance practices, non-performance of contracted tasks or other violations of the contract). Coordinates contracted work with other units to prevent delays or inconveniences, as possible. Prepare daily, weekly, and quarterly reports, produces contract specified paperwork for non-performance of work. Prepares inspection schedules for contract performance, courtesy, and management team inspections.
  4. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: assists subordinates in completing assignments; troubleshoots and makes minor repairs to equipment; contacts outside repair person for major repairs; disposes of worn and obsolete equipment according to State and University guidelines; conducts periodic staff meetings to disseminate general information relating to agency policy or specifics of work assignments; conducts periodic meetings on job safety.??

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily in-person contact with other university staff to coordinate schedules and minimize disruption of university services. They have occasional in-person contact with vendors when purchasing equipment, and with repair people when requesting repairs to equipment.??

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from the unit or administrative superior. Work is reviewed for conformance to university policy, procedures and guidelines, adherence to project standards and specifications, and to unit's budget.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found on higher education universities throughout the state. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.?? They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to walk, stand, and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. They require the willingness to work from ladders, scaffolds, and other aboveground locations such as on roofs. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odor, and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to lift and carry heavy objects. Some positions may require the willingness to work with or around chemicals and caustic compounds such as pesticides, herbicides, disinfectants and cleaning agents. Some positions may require the willingness to work in confined spaces.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience as a maintenance or general laborer.
